What is logging?

Logging encompasses all stages of timber harvesting, such as felling, processing, sorting, and, if necessary, skidding to the skid trail (as is the case, for example, with logging using harvesters).

To this day, traditional logging horses and forestry tractors are still used alongside highly advanced machinery. This work can then be performed by ordinary forest workers and, in some cases, contractors without any special training on the machinery. However, when felling or harvesting large quantities of timber on uneven terrain, contractors with their own machinery are often called upon.

What is sustainable logging?

To ensure that logging is sustainable, the use of rubber bands and biodegradable lubricants must be standard practice. Furthermore, planned operations must be carefully planned and professionally executed. Lightfoot Harvesting provides you with skilled operators and specialized equipment for this purpose. This helps protect your soil, your trees, and the next generation of trees—ensuring a multi-layered and climate-resilient forest.

Logging with harvesters

Today, most logging operations are carried out using harvesters. These machines operate from the skid trail and reach into the stand. This allows trees to be selectively harvested in a way that minimizes soil disturbance. Measurement takes place automatically as the logs are cut. The logs are then stacked along the skid trail for the forwarder.

We carry out this task using several machines of various sizes. We use conventional harvesters as well as the Königstiger T 25, T 30, T 40, and T 50. This allows us to handle all diameter classes, even under difficult ground conditions.

Timber Harvesting by Federal State

In Germany, timber harvest varies greatly from one federal state to another, depending on forest area, tree species, and regional conditions. The leaders in timber harvest are traditionally forested regions such as Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, which, with their high proportion of spruce, contribute significantly to the timber harvest. States such as Hesse, Lower Saxony, and Thuringia also have significant logging figures. In areas with less forest cover, such as Schleswig-Holstein or the Saarland, logging volumes are correspondingly lower.

The Federal Environment Agency provides a detailed overview of timber harvesting in the individual federal states: Logging in Germany.
